It's best to cite the original source, whenever possible. However, there are times when the original source is unavailable. In these cases, you can use what's known as a source from another source, or indirect quote.
In-text citation example
Hollander states that an "echo can be juxtaposed to show the emptiness of the original, deny its validity" (qtd. in Beran 170).
Works Cited
Only Beran is listed in the Works Cited (not Hollander), as Beran is the only source you consulted.
