KIN 4400: Independent Research Study in Kinesiology

What is PICO?

Researchers use the PICO model to formulate an answerable research question and determine whether the evidence they find is relevant to their topic.  PICO is an acronym for the following:

  • P - Problem, patient, population, problem
  • I - Intervention
  • C - Comparison, control - this may not apply to all topics
  • O - Outcome

Occasionally PICO will contain additional letters:

  • S - Study design/methodology
  • T - Type of question/study
