What is a Systematic Review?

A systematic review is a literature review with distinguishing features that set it apart from other review papers:

  • Clearly stated research question, usually framed using PICO
  • Explicitly stated search strategy including search terms and databases used in the search
  • Clearly defined inclusion and exclusion criteria for selecting the studies under review
  • Synthesis of all the available evidence on a topic
