Journal Articles in AJP

When citing a journal article, use:

  • Last names of every author, with up to two initials of their first names, in bold
  • Title of the article with first word and proper nouns/abbreviations capitalized
  • Abbreviated version of the journal title, as used in PubMed, Index Medica, or Medline, in italics
  • Only the volume number of the journal is required
  • Page range, with no abbreviated “p.” – omit if no page numbers are available, e.g. online journal with no PDF version
  • Year of publication

Example:

1. Villalobos AR, Parmelee JT, Renfro JL. Choline uptake across the ventricular membrane of neonate rat choroid plexus. Am J Physiol Cell Physiol 276: C1288-C1296, 1999.


Unpublished/Prepublished Papers:

Papers may appear in online format before being formally published in print.  To cite a prepublished paper, use a digital object identifier, or DOI, in your citation, as well as the date of initial access.  Once a paper is published in print the citation can be modified to include publisher information, but the DOI and date of initial access are retained.

Before publication:

1. Scarafia LE, Winter A, Swinney DC. Quantitative expression analysis of the cellular specificity of HECT-domain ubiquitin E3 ligases. Physiol Genomics (April 26, 2001). doi:10.1152/physiolgenomics.00075.2001.

After publication:
